The IRS is giving taxpayers and tax prepares in the path of Hurricane Sandy extra time to file paperwork that was due on Oct. 31. You now have until November 7th.
The extension is without penalty, and applies only those of us in an area affected by Hurricane Sandy or otherwise impacted by the storm. This relief primarily applies to businesses whose payroll and excise tax returns and payments were due on Halloween.
The IRS also plans to give additional filing and payment relief based on qualifying disaster declarations by Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Details will be posted on the Tax Relief in Disaster Situations page on the IRS website — as of 4pm Friday, they hadn’t been posted, but you can follow the instructions for Hurricane Irene in the meantime..
