Intrepid Space and Science Festival 2017Meet NASA astronauts, learn how space explorers live and work in space, see films about space exploration and more, at the annual Space & Science Festival at the Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum.

It’s one of New York City’s largest celebrations of science and space exploration, with both FREE and ticketed events, August 1-6.

Hear astronaut’s stories about flying into space, experience the movement of satellites in real time, glimpse into the future of space exploration, and see two iconic films about space travel.

Here’s part of what’s on tap, to educate and enchant anybody who has ever looked up at the sky and wondered what’s up there:

Watch a free outdoor movie: The Martian: August 1 on the Flight Deck
During a manned mission to Mars, astronaut Mark Watney finds himself alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist, while NASA and a team of scientists work to bring him home. Visitors are welcome to bring refreshments, blankets and chairs onto the flight deck to watch the film. Alcohol is not permitted.
Visit the massive NASA expo: August 3–6 in Hangar 3
Use virtual reality to explore the International Space Station and planets in and out of our solar system. Get hands-on with NASA’s latest tech, launch systems, new X-plane designs, Earth observations and more!
Attend our free Family Astronomy Night: August 4 on the Hangar Deck and Flight Deck
Learn about designing a drone helicopter for Mars with JPL’s MiMi Aung, meet the NASA team that is helping us get to the Red Planet, see shows in the pop-up planetarium, and stargaze on the flight deck.
Catch the NYC premiere of Moon Shot: August 4 & 5 in the Space Shuttle Pavilion
To re-create the early days of the Space Race, seven actors will squeeze onto a stage nearly as tight as the original Mercury capsules—about 21 square feet. Using only their bodies and their voices, they will bring to life a thrilling time in the history of human exploration. Chicago’s Theater Unspeakable will perform the show next to the apogeal artifact of the Space Race, the space shuttle Enterprise. Buy tickets here.
Launch into conversation with NASA:
August 3–6 in Hangar 3, Allison & Howard Lutnick Theater, Space Shuttle Pavilion
There will be many opportunities to meet NASA team members who are involved in the most exciting initiatives and missions at the space agency. Don’t miss the free screening of Hidden Figures followed by a conversation with NASA panelists, and check out presentations and discussions with astronauts, astrophysicists and NASA’s Chief Technologist Douglas Terrier.
