NYCOTC hopes you are safe, warm and dry after Hurricane Sandy. Many of our friends, family and neighbors were not so lucky, but you can help by donating your time or money. Here’s how to help —
Volunteers are needed throughout New York City and the Tri-State area. In NYC, email nycservice@cityhall.nyc.gov with your name, email address, and borough. You’ll be contacted with ways to help today and over the next week.
The Red Cross is also looking for shelter volunteers. The New York Red Cross website also will tell you where you can donate blankets and clothing for those left homeless.
Contact a nursing home nearest you. They’ll welcome your help serving meals, pushing wheelchairs. I volunteered at the nursing home where my late mother spent her last few years and it was a wonderful experience.
Bring some home-baked cookies to your nearest police or fire department location. These First Responders have been working 24/7 to rescue and help the victims of Superstorm Sandy.
Donate money to a reputable charity — Red Cross, Salvation Army, City Harvest, Humane Society come to mind. BEWARE of what I call pop-up charities that appear suddenly to take advantage of a disaster — they may be frauds — just like this fake photoshopped photo of the Statue of Liberty in Hurricane Sandy that’s been making the rounds.
We are all hurting right now. The storm has passed, but the emergency is still with us. Help your fellow New Yorkers, and those in New Jersey and Connecticut by volunteering or donating money.
I LOVE NEW YORK is more than an advertising slogan.
