Holocaust Remembrance Day in NYC

POSTED BY
Evelyn Kanter

holocaust remembrance dayHolocaust Remembrance Day 2015 in New York City is Thursday, April 16th. The Museum of Jewish Heritage is FREE all day, for the day-long observance to remember those who were lost and learn from those who survived.

Be sure to visit the Zen-like outdoor Garden of Stones, overlooking the Hudson River for some quiet reflection. Each of the huge stone boulders is planted with a tiny sapling, to represent strength and renewal. It’s my favorite spot at the Museum of Jewish Heritage.

The Museum of Jewish Heritage is at the western edge of Battery Park.  Of course, donations are accepted.

On Wednesday, April 15th, attend a FREE Yom Hashoah program, From Hell to Liberation: Jewish Displaced Persons in 1945 at the Center for Jewish History in Flatiron.  On this 70th anniversary of the end of the Shoah, this program takes a special look at Jewish life immediately following liberation. Avinoam Patt and others look at YIVO’s DP collection and discuss how survivors rebuilt their lives and communities in the aftermath of the Holocaust. 6:30pm. RSVP is required to ensure space.

Also on Wednesday, also at the Center for Jewish Hstory, a lecture by the author of Loyal Sons: Jewish Soldiers in the German Army in the Great War, which traces the experiences of Jews in the German army during WWI through a remarkable collection of first-hand testimony. Author Peter Appelbaum, with an introduction by Jay Winter and personal reminiscences by Inge Auerbacher and Peter Waldmann. I have my own personal reminiscences – my grandfather served in the Kaiser’s army, and my mother was born on the army base in Ingolstadt. Also at 6:30 pm. FREE, but $10 suggested donation. Reservations required to ensure space.

Also on Thursday, attend a Holocaust Commemoration at St. Francis College in Brooklyn Heights, at 11:10am. The rabbi, rabbi emeritus and cantor of Congretation Mount Sinai are officiating.  Rabbi Potasnik will discuss Being Human in the Face of Inhumanity, while Cantor Lissek will offer personal experiences from her family history and a collection of songs, including El Maleh Rahamim (A Memorial Prayer for the six million), If the World Had Cried, and Hatikvah (the Israeli National Anthem). Additional information here.

The Museum of Jewish Heritage also is sponsoring a ceremony of remembrance at Temple Emanu-el on Fifth Avenue next Sunday, April 19th.  Also FREE, but tickets are required to ensure space. Reserve a ticket here, before tomorrow, April 13th. The Yom Hashoah ceremony is at 2pm.
