NYC store news — The Upper West Side is becoming a shoe-in for high fashion footwear, with the opening of a new DSW on 79th and Broadway and the expansion of Harry’s Shoes a few blocks north, at 83rd Street.
Harry’s, a family-owned, locally-owned neighborhood institution for more than 80 years, is doubling in size, taking over a piece of the Talbot’s next door.
DSW, which is based in Columbus, Ohio, is opening in the space which used to be Filene’s Basement, before that company went bankrupt last year. It’s just one of several new DSW locations in New York City. Both shoe shops will be open by NYC Fashion Week in September, according to Crain’s New York Business. But when I passed by the other day, it looked like they would be ready sooner, perhaps by August.
Harry’s Shoes also has a separate store just for children’s shoes at Broadway ant 84th Street, which has been open for a couple of years, and a go-to location for back to school shoes.
Both Harry’s Shoes locations for grown-ups and kids, as well as locally-owned Tip Top Shoes on 72nd Street near Broadway, feature top shoe brands such as Thierry Rabotin, Keen, Merrell, Ecco, Munro, Arche, and Dansko, and skilled sales professionals. Discounter DSW, of course, is self-service.
