Instead of standing in the street with your arm up, the smartphone app Hailo would let you hail a NYC taxi with a few taps. Hailo is already in use in cities including London, Toronto, Boston and Chicago — but not yet legally here in New York City, where its use is tied up in the courts. Even so, people are using it, along with the car-reservation app Uber.
Simply – NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission rules for yellow medallion taxis prohibit reserving or ordering them. That is reserved for so-called black cars, also called car services. But you should check out Hailo. If you sign up now, if and when it becomes legal to use in NYC you’ll get a $10 credit.
If you do use either Hailo or Uber to hail a yellow taxi, let NYCOTC know about your experience. Email me at evelyn@nyconthecheap.com.
