Gilda’s Club NYC is presenting its first-ever virtual concert, “It’s Always Something,” with a star-studded list that includes performances by Sting, Jon Batiste, Rosanne Cash, Kenny Loggins, David Sanborn, Kandace Springs, Bernie Williams and Gil Parris.
The show also will include appearances from Jon Hamm, Brooke Shields, JB Smoove, Robin Roberts and others.
It’s Always Something is a fund-raiser for the FREE cancer support programs to those affected by cancer, so all proceeds from the concert will go directly to supporting the organization’s efforts.
Gilda’s Club NYC is named after Gilda Radner, the brilliant comedian best known for her wacky characters on Saturday Night Live, for which she won an Emmy Award, including for her portrayal of Rosanne Roseannadanna.
That character was based on the Channel 7/Eyewitness News reporter Roseanne Scamardella, with whom I worked when I was the Consumer Reporter at the same station.
She was an original cast member of Saturday Night Live.
Those were the days when SNL featured such other now-iconic cast members as John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy and Bill Murray.
Gilda Radner also performed in a one-woman show on Broadway and at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC.
But I digress.
Radner died of ovarian cancer in 1989. Gilda’s Club NYC was founded by her widower, the equally brilliant comedian Gene Wilder.
The “It’s Always Something” concert is named for one of her regular phrases as one of her wonderfully wacky characters.
The concert is Wednesday, May 19, at 8 pm EST.
All proceeds will will go directly to supporting the organization’s efforts.
“As Gilda would say, ‘it’s always something’ and she was right,” said Lily Safani, CEO of Gilda’s Club NYC in a statement.
“We are incredibly grateful to all the artists that are donating their time to help us raise funds to support our free programs and reach more New Yorkers than ever before,” she continued.
“It’s Always Something” is produced by Susan Brecker and Mark Krantz along with original SNL writer, Alan Zweibel, consulting.
Ray Conley will MC the event. Will Lee will serve as the musical director.
