Freebie Friday: Cheap is great. Free is even better. Sample FREE French cheese, and gourmet burgers at these two special food events to enjoy in NYC today only, Friday April 10.
Bloomy Rind Cheese Pop Up Shop: Sample French cheeses FREE at this one day event promoting things with rinds that ripen, including Camembert and Brie. It’s a promotion by the French Cheese Board for its new La Maison du Fromage gallery and event space, 11am to 7pm, at 26 West 39th St. You can pair your cheese with fine French wine, which is not free, but half-price.
Burger & Lobster: The first US outpost of the UK’s popular chain celebrates its recent opening with a burger giveaway. From noon to 2pm today, get a mini burger – larger than a slider but smaller than the 10-ounce full-size burger – with all the fixins’ at 39 W. 19th St. This is a three-ounce version, on a white and black sesame seed potato brioche bun, with house made pickles, pickled onions, shred iceberg lettuce, Burger & Lobster’s proprietary burger sauce, beefsteak tomato slice, white Cheddar, American cheese AND applewood smoked bacon.
And let’s hear it for the beef. It’s pure Nebraska beef. All the beef used at the six Burger & Lobster locations in the UK and the one in New York City is from Nebraska, amounting to seven tons (or 14,000 pounds) a month.
Some Nebraska cattlemen will be on hand, too, along with a band from Nebraska and Nebraska Governor Pete Rickettes.
NYC on the Cheap editor Evelyn Kanter has a connection to both Nebraska and Nebraska beef.
My father was a butcher, so I know good beef. And I went to the University of Missouri School of Journalism, best J-School on the planet. The Mizzou Tigers are arch rivals of Nebraska’s Cornhuskers.
