Get a FREE tour of the rooftop garden on the 41st floor of the Westin New York Grand Central, with the hotel’s executive chef and chief gardener as your guide. The 1,300 square foot vegetable garden is now in its second year, growing organic veggies and herbs used in the hotel’s restaurants and bars.
The 30-minute tours are at 5PM Thursday, June 19 and 26, by reservation only. Either stop by the Concierge Desk located in the lobby at 212 East 42nd Street, or phone the Concierge Desk at 212-490-8900 for a confirmed registration. Walk-ins will not be accepted. Wear comfortable shoes, not flip-flops or heels, since you’ll be walking on uneven garden terrain. And bring a camera for the spectacular views, including the Chrysler Building literally in your face.
I visited the garden last year on a tour for journalists, and was impressed by the variety of what was being grown, from heirloom tomatoes and mesclun lettuces for salads to mint for mojitos and basil and oregano for seasonings. The garden utilizes only organic plants, soil, fertilizer and insect deterrents, including eco-friendly ladybugs..
The tour is led by Executive Chef and Brian Wieler, an avid gardener, who will also discuss the hotel’s culinary program and guests can ask questions during a Q&A session.
