Some of the best NYC museum exhibits aren’t at NYC museums at all, but at branches of the New York Public Library. And they’re FREE. Here’s what’s closing soon to see before they are gone:
Katherine Hepburn: Dressed for Stage and Screen is a retrospective of the personal, theater and movie clothing of a real celebrity icon and superstar, along with personal papers and other memorabilia. At the NYPL branch for the Performing Arts, in Lincoln Center, through January 12th. Exhibit website.
Lunch Hour NYC looks back at more than a century of New York lunches, before power brokers invented what became known as the “power lunch”, when local charities established a 3-cent school lunch, and you could slip a few nickles into the slot at Horn & Hardart for a piping hot macaroni and cheese or creamed spinach. At the main branch of the NYPL, on Fifth Avenue, through February 17th. Exhibit website
Visualizing Emancipation is an astounding collection of photographs, many of which have never been exhibited in public before, of freed slaves in the years shortly after the Civil War. The exhibit is in honor of the 150th anniversary of the Emancapation Declaration, signed by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1862. The exhibit is at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, through March 16th. Exhibit website.
