One of the best freebies in town is the NYPL “Author Talks and More” series at the Mid-Manhattan branch, featuring authors on subjects ranging from Broadway theater history to our fascination with serial killers.
Next week, two authors trace the history of the Meatpacking district, and the importance of uncovered artifacts. Save the dates for:
Metamorphisis: Meatpacking: On Tuesday, Feb. 17, photographer Brian Rose hosts a photo-talk about the changes in this neighborhood, with images from 1985 and the same streets from 2013. Before it became gentrified, including with an Apple Retail Store, this really was the city’s wholesale district for butchers and restaurant owners. Each time I visit what’s now called MeaPo, I wonder what my late father, and old-fashioned German butcher, would think of the fashion designer shops and fancy restaurants here now.
A History of New York in 101 Objects: On Wednesday, Feb. 18, Sam Roberts, the urban affairs correspondent at the New York Times, discusses his ambitious task of excavating the meaning of some of NYC’s most noteworthy artifacts.
Both programs are at 6:30pm, on the sixth floor of the Mid-Manhattan Branch, across Fifth Avenue from the main NYPL building with the lions out front. There are no reservations, so be there by 6:15 to get a seat.
