Below the asphalt and the potholes sprouting with spring temperatures, there’s an entire other world. Learn what lies beneath the streets of New York in a FREE lecture about the excavations for the Second Avenue subway.
Get answers to questions about what’s under Second Avenue, how a giant a tunnel boring machine moves through solid rock, and more. The speaker is Second Avenue Subway Geologist Julie Freitas. The geology talk is Thursday, March 13, at 6 p.m., at MTA Second Avenue Subway Community Information Center (CIC), Second Avenue at 84th St.
Ms. Freitas will explain the origins and characteristics of the rocks and soil under Second Avenue- and how they influence the construction methods used to build the subway, including avoiding and protecting the hundreds of miles of water mains and electrical and phone wires under the streets.
I remember giggling in grade school when the teacher explained that most of Manhattan is made of mica schist.
