There’s no denying the economic importance of NYC’s Garment District in the world’s fashion business. See how it developed, and its continued impact, including the recent New York Fashion Week designer shows, in a FREE exhibit in the heart of the NYC Garment District. The exhibit, Urban Fabric, is the first exhibit by the new Skyscraper Museum Midtown Branch, located at 1411 Broadway, which was the commercial center of the Garment District when I was growing up in NYC. The exhibit is in the building lobby, open Monday to Friday, noon to 6 p.m. Museum website
A bit of NYC history – Once home to the largest concentration of skyscraper factories in the world and more than 100,000 manufacturing jobs, the historic Garment District has changed dramatically in the past 50 years, but remains one of NYC’s most authentic and vibrant neighborhoods. Constructed almost entirely in the boom decade from 1921-1931, the “Art Deco” district contains more than 125 stepped-back “loft” buildings that took the pyramidal forms dictated by the city’s then-new zoning law.
