Your weekend plans begin here, with a couple of dozen FREE and cheap things to do this mid-April weekend that includes Easter Egg hunts, a new museum exhibition about music icon Leonard Cohen, the first of NYC’s cherry blossom festivals, NYC Record Store Day, and the annual Hot Sauce Expo.
And now that the weather is nice, it’s Street Fair season, too.
Everything we suggest is $25 or less, and most are FREE and family-friendly, so you can enjoy more NYC for less money.
That just happens to be the NYC on the Cheap motto – get more NYC for less money.
There’s so much to see and do in NYC and never enough time to see and do it all.
Let’s hope the weather cooperates with outdoor events.
And if it doesn’t, here are some rainy day activities in NYC, besides re-arranging your sock drawer.

Leonard Cohen: A Crack in Everything, was organized by the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (MAC), Cohen’s hometown, before he died, and received his personal approval. There are kiosks to hear his music, and more.

Les Colombes
See thousands of white origami doves, folded by people of all ages, races and faiths, in a special art installation designed to illustrate the issue of mass incarceration, and what “release” means to those in prison or newly released. Some of the doves have been created by New York City school children.
The doves soar over the nave of The Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest on the Upper East Side, and it’s FREE to experience. There’s also a contemplative light and sound show for the first month of installation.
Visitors can create additional doves and to write their thoughts on the folded doves, specifically related to their ideas on what the theme of “release” means to them—release from burdens, pain, addiction or any other adversity each individual would like to overcome.
NYC on the Cheap publisher/editor Evelyn Kanter got a preview last night, and I can tell you that it’s both artistic and spiritual. The sound and light show is mesmerizing.
- FREE at Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest is at 1085 Fifth Ave. at 90th St.
