NYC Free: John Coltrane Music Festival

POSTED BY
Evelyn Kanter

free jazz conceerts in new york cityThe annual FREE Wall to Wall festival celebrates jazz legend John Coltrane this year, exploring the wide span of his career through music, dance, film and discussions about his musical art and his influence on the jazz world.

Wall to Wall John Coltrane is Sunday, June 9 at Symphony Space on the UWS, from 3pm to 11pm.  Choose to attend one musical set section or more, FREE

Participants include Reggie Workman + Brooklyn Raga Massive, Soul Science Lab, Wallace Roney, Lakecia Benjamin, Ben Allison Quartet, Jaleel Shaw Trio, James Francies, Ben Williams, Brandee Younger, Carl Hancock Rux, Ashley Kahn + Ken Druker, Abiodun Oyewole, Melanie Charles, Kassa Overall, Raydar Ellis, MuMu Fresh, John Robinson, Da’Von Doane, Savannah Harris Trio, Jazz at Lincoln Center Youth Orchestra, and Mykel Marai Nairne.

Symphony Space is at 95th St. and Broadway.

There is no reserved seating for the free performances — and since this is a popular annual event, you could be standing in line for an hour or more as Symphony Space rotates people in and out of the theater.

Guaranteed seating ranges from $100 to $500, which includes a contribution to support Symphony Space — click here to reserve a ticket and also to see the schedule of performers.

This is a busy residential and retail section of NYC, one block from a major subway stop (1, 2, 3).

Please be kind to your neighbors and neighborhood business owners and do not block the sidewalk in front of Symphony Space

There’s more FREE jazz at the week-long annual Charlie Parker Jazz Festival each August, with concerts, films and dance performances in NYC parks.

Segment One: 3pm – 6pm:

Early Coltrane: a multi-genre musical exploration of Coltrane’s world, a discussion of the “lost” album, and more.
