Formula E Racing in Brooklyn

POSTED BY
Evelyn Kanter

Formula E racing in NYC @nyconthecheap

The first Formula racing in modern NYC history comes to Brooklyn in mid-July, with electric racecars. Formula E is the world’s first fully-electric racing series, with races around the world, from Monaco to Montreal, Beijing to Brooklyn.

The NYC ePrix is at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal on July 15th and 16th, with open-wheel racecars from Panasonic, Jaguar, Andretti and Venturi, which has been building rocket-shaped electric vehicles to win the world land speed record.

To answer your question – no – Tesla is not competing.

This posting is from 2017.

The 1.21 mile circuit features 13 turns, at speeds of 100mph or more, with the Statue of Liberty and the skyline of Lower Manhattan as a backdrop.

Unlike conventional races in gas-powered vehicles, like the Indy 500, Formula E drivers race a couple of laps and then change vehicles for another few laps, and best times win. Changing vehicles is necessary because at such constant high speed, electric batteries drain sooner than a conventional electric family car driven at conventional road speeds.

But as with conventional races in gas-powered vehicles, including Formula 1 racing, what is learned on the track often trickles down into our driveways.

With Formula E, the focus is on new battery technologies that will let our plug-in family cars go faster and further between charges.

The NYC ePrix also has family-friendly events, including the opportunity to meet drivers, exhibits where kids can see tomorrow’s technology, and an area where grown-ups can test drive EV cars, but not the racecars.

This is an FIA-sanctioned race, before the finals in Montreal later in the year.

Single day tickets for this history-making event are $85 for adults, $55 for students, $42.50 for children 5-15.  Group tickets of 8+ are $68.  Weekend tickets for access o both days are $150 for adults, $95 for students, and $75 for children.  There is no group discount for the two-day ticket.

Get tickets now directly from FIA Formula E before they sell out.
