POSTED BY

https://www.nyconthecheap.comAs we tell you often here on NYC on the Cheap, cheap is good, free is better, and there always are lots of both in NYC.  Here are the best FREE things to see and do this week, May 21-25, in the greatest city on the planet.

brooklyn bridge 135th anniversaryCelebrate the 135th anniversary of the opening of Brooklyn Bridge at Brooklyn Bridge Park with a screening of Roebling’s Bridge.  The film’s producer Mark Friedman hosts Fred Caesar, curator of the Saxonburg Museum, author and historian Clifford Zink, and Kriss Roebling, the great great grandson of Washington Roebling, for a discussion, screening and Q&A.

  • The event is FREE, 7:30pm, at Harbor View Lawn.  More info here.

NYCONTHECHEAP Fleet WeekThe fleet is in!  The 30th annual NYC Fleet Week 2018, celebrates all the Sea Services, is May 23-29, with FREE Navy Band concerts and drill performances, demonstrations of the latest battle and rescue technology, and the chance to tour ships on active duty.

NYC free exhibitsMeet 200 women who will change the way you see the world, at a special FREE interactive photo and video exhibit. The  exhibit highlights diversity and equality through the stories of 200 women from around the world, who were asked five fundamental questions on the theme ‘what is most important to you’. The 200 Women exhibition is sponsored by BMW, and is at Pen + Brush, 29 East 22nd St., through June 30, then travels to Munich, Germany, BMW’s headquarters city.

nyc parksPeople have said NYC is for the birds.  You can see hundreds of them – birds, that is – on the FREE birding tours twice a week in Bryant Park, through the end of May.

See the schedule here.

SEA (Singular Extreme Actions) is a thrilling show in which daredevil performers interact with mechanics and apparatus specifically created for the show.  Human bodies careen through, around, and above invented hardware in a FREE performance that  dance, athletics, boxing, rodeo, circus, and stunt work.  There are performances at Noon and 6pm Thursday through Saturday at Brookfield Place.

  • Kids have a chance to work with the equipment on Saturday morning, between 9am and 11am, for a 30 minute session. Sign up now FREE for your preferred session to ensure space.
