The one-hour symbolic gesture is 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.
New York is one of 7,000 cities in 158 countries around the globe throwing the switch for the environment.
Earth Hour started in Sydney, Australia in 2007 when more than 2 million individuals and 2,000 businesses turned off their lights to show their commitment to the environment.
Some of the other top works attractions turning off the lights this year are the Pyramids in Giza, the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and even the Las Vegas Strip.
BTW – Earth Hour is separate from Earth Day, which is Tuesday, April 22m 2014.
