Save the date: Sunday June 14th for the Thirteenth Annual Drums Along the Hudson, a FREE festival of Native American drumming, dancing and story telling, at the northern tip of Manhattan, around where Peter Minuit purchase the island from the local tribe around 400 years ago.
There are performances by the NYC-based Thunderbird American Indian Dancers, plus international dance and drumming traditions from Asia and Africa. This year’s event honors His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso.
In keeping with Native American respect for the environment, once again this year, the festival features an Environmental Tent and a free bicycle valet for attendees who ride their bike to the park.
Drums Along the Hudson is 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday, June 14th, at Inwood Hill Park, at 218th St. and Indian Road, rain or shine, so let’s hope for shine.
Take the “A” train to 207th Street or the #1 train to 215th St. and Broadway, and walk west, toward the Hudson River. The program is jointly sponsored by the NYC Dept. of Parks and Recreation, the NYC Dept. of Cultural Affairs, and Lotus Music & Dance. See you there. Call (212) 627-1076 ext 18 for more information.
FWIW: NYC on the Cheap editor Evelyn Kanter grew up in Inwood.
