This isn’t what we normally write about here on NYC on the Cheap, but it is such good news for moms, grammies and the kids we love, that it’s worth sharing — Disney is banishing commercials for sugary, empty-calorie junk-food from its TV programs for kids. The Walt Disney Co. becomes the first major media company to ban such ads for its TV channels, radio stations and websites intended for children. That’s the good news. The bad news — the junk food ban won’t go into effect until 2015, because of existing advertising agreements. Even so, at an event announcing the decision, First Lady Michelle Obama, who campaigns for healthy food habits for kids and adults, calls the Disney decision a “game-changer.” Click here to read the full article reported in the Crain’s New York.
