Chasing Ice is a spectacularly beautiful documentary film that follows National Geographic photographer James Balog in a five-year quest to document how climate change is melting glaciers. There is time-lapse photography from cameras bolted into the sides of mountains, jaw-dropping video of chunks of ice the size of lower Manhattan calving off a glacier in the Arctic, and more. We have discount tickets just $7 for showings on Sunday, January 13th and 20th at the Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theater on the Upper West Side.
I saw the film recently with my son, and recommend it enthusiastically. I’m also keeping my fingers crossed that Chasing Ice is nominated for an Academy Award.
More than a documentary about climate change, this is also an adventure story, about a group of dedicated outdoor experts braving some of the world’s harshest weather and dangerous, 21st century Arctic explorers with digital cameras. Look carefully at this image — that black dot in the upper middle of the image is one of the Chasing Ice adventurer photographers. It gives you some sense of scale about how big glaciers are, and what it takes to melt them. This one is is about as tall as a 1-story building.
