Nikolai Gogol’s The Government Inspector is a classic satire on human vanity and the corruption of elected officials — and it’s more relevant today than ever. These politicians behaving badly are the greedy, self-serving officials of a small town in Tsarist Russia who mistake a penniless clerk for a government inspector, and chaos, recrimination and retribution ensue. Will the villagers realize that they’re lavishing all this bribery on the wrong man? This cutting, tragic farce is a painful and hilarious investigation of the abandonment of character — with a good dose of soul.
