Marathon swimmer Diana Nyad is swimming in NYC Herald Square to help raise money for victims of Superstorm Sandy. The legendary record-smashing swimmer is doing laps for 48 hours straight, beginning at 8:30 a.m. today, in a specially-built 120-foot-long lap pool. The NYC swim follows by a few weeks Diana Nyad’s world record 110 mile swim from Cuba to Florida.
That swim was for the record books. This one is to support Sandy recovery efforts and raise money for AmeriCares, the global health and disaster relief organization. The first anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, also called Superstorm Sandy, is the end of this month.
Diana Nyad, who is 64 years old, was born here in New York City. She is being joined at various times by Olympic gold medalists Nastia Liukin and Ryan Lochte, comedian Michael Ian Black, health guru Richard Simmons, Jersey Shore’s Sammi “Sweetheart” Giancola, “True Blood’s” Joe Manganiello and “Twilight’s” Nikki Reed.
The event is being underwritten by Procter & Gamble.
