Ahead of Earth Day 2016, bring your creativity and problem solving skills to the FREE #ClimateCitizen Hackathon in NYC, and help the planet find creative solutions to climate change.
Graphics designers, musicians and activist organizers are invited along with scientists, academics and computer programmers, because we need posters and entertainment and events to help spread the word about solving climate change, or at least slowing it down.
The #ClimateCitizen hackathon is sponsored by two top NYC colleges and universities, The Tishman Environment and Design Center (TEDC) and The New School Buildings Sustainable Initiatives
The #ClimateCitizen Hackathon is Friday, March 4, 2016, starting at 11am, at University Center, Starr Foundation Hall, 63 Fifth Ave, UL 102.
The event is FREE, but registration is encouraged. Food and drinks will be provided, and there are prizes for the best ideas. For questions, please contact Molly Johnson, Sustainability Associate, at molly@newschool.edu
These are the hackathon groups you can participate in:
Data Interpretation and Visualization
- For designers and data lovers – Dig into The New School’s real energy use and emissions data. Help us create posters, infographics, mobile apps, web pages and more to show how much energy The New School uses, what that means for the university’s emissions, and the impacts of possible efficiency projects or energy saving initiatives on campus. Use your data visualization skills to inspire climate action!
TNS Carbon “Internet of Things”
- For systems thinkers – The Internet of Things extends internet connectivity beyond traditional devices like desktop and laptop computers, smartphones and tablets to a diverse range of devices and everyday things that utilize embedded technology to communicate and interact with the external environment, all via the Internet. Help map out how physical objects, devices and buildings are technologically connected to each other and the human community. Help envision how these connections can be increased or improved to better engage the community in achieving our energy efficiency and emissions reduction goals.
Climate Action Campaign
- For activists and organizers – Use your leadership, management, and planning skills to design new tools, strategies, or campaigns to engage New School students, faculty, and staff and empower groupsommunity to have an impact on energy use and emissions.
Energy to Art
Calling all actors, dancers, musicians, visual artists and other creative folks!
- For actors, dancers, musicians, visual artists and other creative types – Use your knack for artistic expression to tell the story of climate and environment initiatives as a call to action. Compose a song, choreograph a dance, perform a spoken word poem, paint a picture, or surprise us with your artistic interpretation.
The New School’s Climate Action Plan will guide the efforts of the university to reduce the university’s greenhouse gas emissions and become the model for designing scalable and transferable solutions to create a better, more resilient and more equitable future. And, of course, it has broader implications and applications than just the New School.
