For the first time ever, Citi Bike is offering single-ride fares. Pay just $4 for one ride, instead of buying a 24-hour pass for $12. The single ride deal is being offered during April only, in the hopes it will encourage more people to try the bicycle-sharing program.
Citi Bike stations have been sprouting like weeds all over the city, with nearly 600 stations and nearly 6,000 bikes in Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn.
Citi Bike currently offers a 24 hour pass for $12 or a three day pass for $24, in addition to yearly memberships. And there’s never ever surge pricing.
Bike-sharing programs are popular around the world, with similar programs in cities including Paris, Barcelona, Beijing and Tel Aviv.
New York City may be the only one that gets no funding from the local government, and the City Council wants to change that.
The Council is petitioning the de Blasio administration to subsidize the privately-owned program with $12 million to help Citi Bike expand to low-income neighborhoods with fewer transportation options, such as the South Bronx, Sunset Park and Bushwick.
