Celebrate the birthday of Brooklyn-born Broadway and Hollywood star Mae West in the NYC building where a judge put her in jail for being too sexy and risque for the 1930s.
That building is now the Jefferson Market Library in Greenwich Village, which is hosting a FREE illustrated lecture about the Brooklyn-born bombshell on Wednesday, August 13th.
The lecture, Mae West in Bohemia — Gin, Sin, Censorship, and Eugene O’Neill: An Illustrated Talk, also includes light refreshments and a raffle for a reprint by a famous illustrator for The New Yorker or the New York Times.
The program is 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM at the NYPL branch at Sixth Avenue and West 10th Street. The speaker is LindaAnn Loschiavo, a Greenwich Village historian and dramatist whose plays include two about the iconic Mae West, “Courting Mae West: Sex, Censorship, and Secrets” and “Diamond Lil, Queen of the Bowery.” Event website.
Mae West wrote many snappy lines for herself with clever double-entrendres that got past the censors. One of her most famous is, “Is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?”
Mae West was an actress, singer, dancer, playwright and composer. A very talented lady, indeed. Born in Brooklyn and buried in Brooklyn. Visit her gravesite at Cypress Hills Cemetery on Jamaica Avenue.
