This is your last chance to see some popular Broadway shows before they close within the next couple of days and weeks.
Get tickets now for these dramas and musicals before they are gone, including The Prom, King Kong, Pretty Woman: The Musical and The Cher Show
Several will be going on tour, turned into a Hollywood movie, or opening in London, but nothing compares with seeing a Broadway show on Broadway. Especially when you can get tickets for as little as $49.
Here’s what’s closing soon, some to make way for new fall openings, others for poor ticket sales.
Closing Sunday, August 11
The Prom
A heartwarming and totally original new musical about big Broadway stars, a small town and a love that unites them all. Billboard cheers, “The Prom is Hairspray meets Dear Evan Hansen!” Variety raves, “It’s so full of happiness that you think your heart is about to burst. The Prom was a fan favorite for a Tony, but walked away empty-handed.
See sit live before it heads for the big screen. The Hollywood movie version stars Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and James Corden, and is due to reach cinemas next fall, 2020.
Closing Sunday, August 11
Be More Chill
What if popularity came in a pill? Would you take it? This sci-fi musical by Joe Iconis and Joe Tracz rode into the Lyceum Theatre on a wave of online fandom and a sold-out off-Broadway run. Unfortunately, the youthful enthusiasm around Be More Chill wasn’t enough to sustain a Broadway run for very long. The show will close after 30 previews and 177 regular performances.
While it’s game over on Broadway, this appealing musical is sure to have a long second-life as amateur and high school productions. A big-screen adaptation is also in the works.
Closing Sunday, August 18
The Cher Show
Cher is one of the biggest stars on earth, and her show is closing. This is despite a Tony for Bob Mackie’s glittering costumes, and one for its star, Stephanie J. Block, who channels the Goddess of Pop eight times a week.
Unfortunately, audiences have signaled that if they’re going to pay Broadway prices, they want to see the real deal. They’re in luck: Cher opens a residency at MGM in Las Vegas on August 21, three days after her virtual self closes on Broadway.
Closing Sunday, August 18
Pretty Woman: The Musical
Putting the beloved 1990 Julia Roberts rom-com onstage with new songs by Bryan Adams wasn’t as much of a slam dunk as one might have anticipated. The musical grossed $558,084 last week (out of a potential $1.3 million). This is a bad sign during the high tourist season, when Pretty Woman should be drawing its biggest audience. This isn’t the last dance for Vivian and Edward, however: The show has announced plans for a North American tour and London run in 2020.

King Kong
It’s your last chance to hang out with a 20-foot-tall, 2,000-pound ape. The musical’s got some serious talent behind it (like La La Land’s composer), but everyone is dwarfed by Kong, who actually roars and leaps on stage, although he doesn’t sing or dance like the rest of the cast.
Capitalized at $30 million, King Kong was the most expensive Broadway debut last year, and one of the most expensive ever. The investment didn’t pay off. It won widespread acclaim for its groundbreaking puppet, but audiences showed little love for its paper-thin book and score.
The producers are hoping for better luck in Shanghai, where it’s due to open in 2021.
Closing Saturday, August 24
What the Constitution Means to Me
How will the Constitution shape the next generation of women? Heidi Schreck earned her college tuition by winning Constitutional debate competitions, but the stories and lives of the women in her family shape her new perspective on America’s cornerstone document. What The Constitution Means To Me, a Pulitzer Prize finalist, features a live onstage debate, plus charm and humor galore in its exploration of America’s groundwork. This is the happiest story on this list.
When Heidi Schreck’s theatrical lecture on the US Constitution played a week-and-a-half run at the Wild Project back in 2017, few people expected it would end up on Broadway. Aug. 24th is the end of the second extension of that Broadway run, which has been hailed by critics and attended by Supreme Court justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
It now has to clear out of the Helen Hayes theater to make way for another scheduled show opening this fall, Linda Vista, but Constitution launches a national tour in January.
There is a small online purchase service fee with Goldstar, just as there is with Telecharge, TodayTix and other online ticket sellers.
