POSTED BY

free braodway shows

January 2017 is the final curtain for several long-running and popular Broadway shows, including Jersey Boys and The Color Purple. Tickets often are discounted for the closing days, so it’s a good time to see something you’ve been putting off, or return to something you loved.

Theater fans know this happens at the end of every year, freeing up those theaters for new shows arriving in the spring.

Three Broadway shows closed over the New Year’s weekend: Fiddler on the Roof, Matilda the Musical and Something Rotten!

Get tickets for shows closing soon directly at the theater, through the show’s own website, through TKTS, or via NYC on the Cheap discount ticket partner Goldstar.

Closing January 8

The Color Purple

Reviewers have described this revival even better than the original production. The musical version the 1982 Alice Walker novel is about a poor black woman who finds the courage to start a new life after years of mistreatment. Alternately sobering and inspiring. Cynthia Erivo won a Tony for her roof-shaking performance. Bringing down the final curtains are Danielle Brooks (Orange is the New Black) and Tony and Grammy-winner Jennifer Holliday.

  • At the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, 242 W. 45th St., colorpurple.com.

Closing January 15

Jersey Boys

Eleven years, one of the longer ones in Broadway history. The Tony-winning musical biography of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons combines a gritty behind-the-scenes saga with all those favorite of pop hits, with interesting staging. It’s also a story about friendship and trust. Mark Ballas (“Dancing with the Stars”) is currently playing Valli.

  • At the August Wilson Theatre, 245 W. 52nd St., jerseboysInfo.com.
The Humans

Stephen Karam’s sobering family drama, about a middle-class Scranton family that comes together over Thanksgiving in the midst of economic problems and serious illness, is one of the most unlikely success stories in recent memory. After premiering off-Broadway, it transferred to a small Broadway theater for a limited run and then transferred to an even larger theater down the street.

  • At the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, 236 W. 45th St., thehumansonbroadway.com.
  • Tickets from $39 from TKTS.

Closing January 29

The Front Page

Hold the presses! Call rewrite! This revival of the 1928  Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur  comedy classic features an all-star cast including Nathan Lane, John Slattery and John Goodman. It’s set in the press room of Chicago’s Criminal Courts Building, with reporters covering the story of an escaped prisoner, and the madcap conspiracy to hide the runaway convict for a front page newspaper scoop.

  • At the Broadhurst Theatre, 235 W. 45th St.,
  • Tickets from $49 weekdays, $89 weekends from TKTS
