Take a break without breaking your entertainment budget. New York City has more of everything than anyplace else on the planet, and that includes happy hour deals for both food and drink. These are our recommendations in Lower Manhattan.

Shorty’s – This mini-chain with four Manhattan locations has a three-hour happy hour Monday to Friday, 4pm to 7pm, with $5 beer (draft, bottle or can), and $6 well drinks. With a couple of dozen beers on the menu, you’ll find everything from German hefeweizen (my personal favorite) to lagers and ales from NYC craft breweries including Sixpoint. Shorty’s also is known for its Philly-style cheesesteaks and hoagies, assembled on bread shipped in daily from Philly. Cheesesteaks and sandwiches are $12 and $13. That means you can have a cheesesteak or a hoagie and a beer for under $20, with enough left over to tip the bartender.

Bubby’s – All drinks are $7 from 4pm to 7pm, Monday to Friday, at both Bubby’s locations, in Tribeca and at the Highline. Options include wine by the glass, a Jamaican rum punch that will have you dreaming of your last Caribbean vacation, a very wet 50/50 Martini that’s an even split of vodka and vermouth, and a similar 50/50 split of whisky and sweet vermouth called the Lower Manhattan. Happy hour snacks also are $7, including a pulled pork sandwich, a burger, and jerk chicken, and outdoor seating to watch the crowds and traffic go by.
