Enjoy NYC on the cheap with these five great FREE things to see and do around town year-round.
Free cruise – One of the world’s greatest water voyages is aboard the Staten Island Ferry, which shuttles year-round between Manhattan and Staten Island. There are picture postcard views of the world famous skyline, including the new World Trade Center, Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Since this is a commuter ferry, used by people to get to and from work between Manhattan and Staten Island, please avoid morning and evening rush hour.
Free technology – The Sony Wonder Technlogy Lab lets kids of all ages have have fun while they learn about robotics, medical imaging, video game design and more. There also are free movie screenings. Sony Wonder Technlogy Lab is at 56th St. and Madison Ave.
More free technology – New York City has more Apple retail stores than anywhere in the planet, where you can confer with a Genius, check your email, take new products for a test run. The world famous glass cube at Fifth Avenue and 59th St. is open 24/7, other stores – in Soho, the Meatpacking District, Lincoln Center and Grand Central Station are open seven days, but hours vary from approximately 9-9, depending on location.
Free history – The National Museum of the American Indian is the NYC branch of the Smithsonian, with a world-class collection of artifacts from all the tribes of the Americas, including South America and the Arctic Circle. Plus, it is housed in a historic Beaux Arts building with a rotunda that reminds me of the US Capitol in Washington, DC. Open daily. Museum website
