Step back into the Sixties at Grand Central Terminal this week, via a special FREE exhibit that pays homage to the decade that changed the world. The exhibit is in cooperation with nearly a dozen Smithsonian Affiliations member museums and CNN, which is broadcasting a documentary series on the Sixties beginning this week.
The museum-style exhibit includes the original bench and key from the jail cell in which Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. penned his famous Letter from a Birmingham Jail, a full flight suit and protective gear recovered from a US pilot whose plane was shot down in Vietnam, rare Beatles memorabilia from the height of their popularity, original posters and artwork from Woodstock, and other cultural and political artifacts and touchstones, including the Apollo 11 moon landing, and the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and his brother Robert Kennedy.
“A Look into THE SIXTIES: An Exhibition on the Decade That Changed the World,” touches on all ten of the major themes explored in the upcoming documentary series, CNN’s THE SIXTIES, executive produced by Tom Hanks.
The exhibit is open today through Friday, May 30th, in Vanderbilt Hall, 9AM to 7PM daily. Docents will be on-hand to answer questions about the artifacts or provide deeper historical and cultural context.
THE SIXTIES premieres on CNN on Thursday, May 29th at 9:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. PT.
