The school prom is a big deal, unless you haven’t got a date, can’t afford to go, or don’t feel welcome because of your sexuality or gender presentation. That’s where the Anti-Prom comes in. This FREE event is a safe space for teens at the man branch of the New York Public Library, on Friday, June 17
It’s free for all teens 12 to 18; there will be dancing, a DJ, and a fashion show and other activities. This year’s theme is Secret Garden, so teens can draw inspiration from garden flowers, vines, trees, or insects to design their own costumes.
Anti-Prom is an alternative, safe space for teens who may not feel welcome at official school programs or dances because of their sexuality, gender presentation, the way they dress, or any other reason. It’s free, a DJ will be spinning, and there will be a fashion show.
- Student ID is required. Full list of acceptable IDs can be found here.
- Only teens 12 to 18 will be admitted.
- ALL bags must be checked.
- Doors close at 8PM.
- For more information or to register, visit here.
This is a great idea, and we hope it spreads to other libraries in other boroughs and communities around New York City.
