NYCOTC loves small businesses, and we love American Express for supporting them, by giving you $5 back on your bill for using your card at a participating business – each time you use the card, up to $50 back before the program ends. That’s a deal!
NYCOTC Editor Evelyn Kanter is the daughter of two local shopkeepers – my mom’s store was in Inwood, my dad’s store was in Riverdale, later on the Upper West Side – so I know well how hard small shopkeepers they work, and how important mom and pop business are to the local economy. Ditto local restaurants.
While we all love the selection at the big box national chains, including restaurant chains, nothing compares with the service you get at a small neighborhood place.
And especially now, when small businesses are struggling to stay in business during these uncertain times, the Amex Shop Small campaign if a win-win for everybody.
If you have an Amex card in your wallet – and most of us do – you can support small businesses and get some cash back in the bargain.
And we hope American Express will run their Small Business Saturday shopping discount program again on Thanksgiving weekend, also to encourage shopping local.
The Amex Shop Small campaign encourages us to spend money at local shops rather than big box retailers and fast food chains.
Here’s how American Express Shop Small works –
Enroll an eligible American Express Card by August 23.
Shop Small —
Make a single purchase of $10 or more using the enrolled card directly at an eligible small business and get a $5 statement credit.
For a map of participating locations in NYC area, click here.
Spread The Love —
Continue supporting small businesses by using the offer up to 10 times by September 20, for a total of up to $50 in statement credits.
If you keep each purchase around the $10 minimum, it’s like having your very own half-price sale.
Of course, we’re not advocating being “cheap” with small businesses — just a consideration for shoppers on a budget.
There are so many wonderful small businesses in the NYC area participating in the program, including pharmacies, liquor stores, grocery stores, even copy centers.
