It’s never easy finding an affordable place to live in NYC. These apartment-finding websites can help, with listings you can search by neigborhood, number of rooms, amenities such as basement laundry room and distance to the nearest subway or Fairway, and so on.
StreetEasy: This is NYC’s largest listing site for condos and co-ops for purchase, but it also tracks rentals.
Rentenna: This fairly new resource made headlines last year for running a contest for the sexiest doorman in NYC, and this year for publishing a map to where celebrities live in NYC. Rentenna also gives a rating to each apartment it lists, relative to its location, landlord, price and such. These ratings are just guidelines, since it really isn’t fair to compare, say, Bayside and Sunyside, or Brooklyn Heights with Washington Heights.
Nakedapartments: This rental search site includes broker reviews and the option to search by fee or no fee apartments, and a useful option to receive daily e-mails for apartments that meet your search criteria.
UrbanEdge: These are straightforward listings only from owners and property managers, not from brokers.
The Listings Project: This was started by an artist, so listings include rooms for rent and entire apartments, sublets, art studios and workspaces, as well as the occasional international home swap. Listings here are fee-free.
InsideDigs: These listings are by current renters giving you a heads-up on their own place, before it hits the market.
Other good rental resources include NYC colleges and universities. My son found his last two roommates that way.
