The Macy’s July 4th Fireworks don’t start until 9PM, so you have the whole day to plan. Here are six things to do in NYC on the cheap on Monday, July 4th, including special events in NYC parks and museums:
Let’s start with family-friendly events at three National Park Service sites, where you can “meet” people from the past, including George Washington, Francis Scott Key, Benjamin Franklin and Civil War soldiers:
At African Burial Ground, celebrate freedom for all individuals on Independence Day. From 11 AM to 3:30 PM, join the 26th US Colored Troops, who will be in period military uniforms to discuss the role of African-American soldiers in winning the Civil War. A memory box craft workshop will take place at 1 PM, led by designer Vickie Fremont. More information here
Castle Clinton National Monument will feature “Francis Scott Key,” played by actor Bob Gleason. Key will hold a meet and greet session before the flag-raising at 10:30 AM, followed by programs at 12 noon and 1 PM More information here.
At Federal Hall National Memorial, both “George Washington” and “Ben Franklin” will be there to greet you between 10 AM and 3:30 PM More information here.
At NYC Museums:
Summer of Hamilton opens on July 4th at the New York Historical Society. More than an exhibit of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton and his influence on American history and his love of New York City, this is a museum-wide celebration of the man behind the blockbuster Broadway musical.
More to do:
The annual Festival of Independence at the South Street Seaport has free concerts starting at 1PM
The annual July 4th hot dot eating contest at Nathan’s in Coney Island. The women’s contest is at 11AM, the men’s at 12:30PM.
