Avoid the Black Friday shopping crowds in stores and online, and do something else besides shopping. Black Friday is over-rated this year since there have been daily holiday deals all month, and there will be more deals next week and through Christmas,. Here are five things to do on Black Friday that don’t involve shopping:
Go to a museum – Several top museums in NYC are FREE on Friday afternoons, including MOMA. Get the complete list here.
Clean out your closets – Make room for the new stuff you’ll be buying on sale for yourself or getting as gifts. Donate your gently worn coat to the needy in NYC through the annual New York Cares holiday coat drive.
See a movie – Disney’s anticipated Frozen opens Friday, so the crowds and lines will melt your patience, like shopping. There must be another flick on your list. Skip the box office lines. Buy movie tickets in advance from Fandango.com.
Grow your family tree – Shake the branches and see what nuts fall out. Ancestry.com has FREE access to some historical databases. I used the site recently to find the names of my maternal grandparents and the name of the ship they came to America on — appropriately, it was the Manhattan.
Download FREE shopping apps to help you save money when you do go shopping – Apps like Yowza, Coupon Sherpa and Red Laser provide coupons and comparison pricing. Find the complete list here.
And if you must shop on BlackFriday, either in person or online, check the NYCOTC Promo Codes page for unadvertised special discounts.
