NYC has closed more than 40 miles of streets to traffic, for strolling, power walking, jogging, bicycling, skateboarding.
In my neighborhood, kids also are playing soccer, roller skate hockey and old-fashioned hopscotch in the roadbed, and grownups have brought out beach chairs and drinks for socializing.
Open Streets are in all five boroughs, inside parks and close to parks, to allow for greater social distancing as the weather warms and more of us need to get outside more often.
There’s a plan to expand the car-free streets to a total of 100 miles.
Open Streets are available daily, 8 am to 8 pm (unless otherwise noted). Opening hours may vary by location due to NYPD staffing.
Think of it as an expanded version of the annual car-free Summer Streets program on weekends in August,

Open Streets Rules
No through traffic permitted while Open Streets are in effect.
Vehicle traffic is limited to local deliveries, pick-ups/drop-offs, necessary city service vehicles, utility vehicles and emergency vehicles only.
When Alternate Side Parking regulations are in effect, drivers must move their vehicles from the street, and may return when ASP is over. These drivers are advised to be extremely cautious and to drive 5 MPH or slower.
Open Streets is a collaboration between the Mayor’s office, NYC Council, NYPD, Parks, NYC DOT, BIDs and local community organizations.
Members of the public and organizations wishing to have other New York City streets considered for the Open Streets program may fill out an online survey. NYC DOT, NYPD and others will evaluate all suggestions for viability. If you have questions, please contact your NYC DOT Borough Commissioner’s office.
