2 free NYC museum exhibits

POSTED BY
Evelyn Kanter

nyc free museumsSome of the most interesting museums in NYC are the smaller ones, also least likely to be crowded. These two museum gallery exhibits are FREE, and within a few blocks walk of one another in Midtown East.

The Arsenal is Central Park’s administrative headquarters, and includes rotating exhibits on NYC history in The Arsenal Gallery.  Currently, it’s an exhibit about the two World’s Fairs in Queens, celebrating their 50th and 75th anniversaries. There are photos and other memorabilia from what was a peek into Tomorrow’s World in 1939 and 1964.  The Arsenal Galley is open Monday-Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, at Fifth Avenue at 64th St.  Website.

The Grolier Club is a private library for members, with a valuable collection of historic books.  The main floor exhibition space is open to the public, and currently has an exhibit of documents, uniforms and other memorabilia, from World War II, entitled The Power of Words and Images in a World at War, the exhibit includes front pages of newspapers published in the US, Britain, Germany and Japan, with headlines about victory, a German sign that says “no dancing”, and more.  I found a typed letter from First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt to a man who questioned our need to fight in the war to be especially touching.  The exhibit is open through August 2nd.  The Grolier Club is open Monday-Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, at 47 East 60th St.  Website.
