Cut the cost of living in New York City or visiting the greatest city in the world with FREE events every day of the week. Here’s what’s on the schedule this final week of July, including family-friendly events, including FREE outdoor movies and concerts, and the chance to dance outdoors under the stars all week all summer.
Lincoln Center Out of Doors starts this week with three weeks of FREE music and dance performances, even an old-fashioned Double-Dutch jump rope demonstration and competition. And FREE films, too, including a salute to Bollywood and the annual Roots of American Music Weekend with a celebration of the music of Chuck Berry and performers including Bonnie Raitt.
Also in full swing is the SummerStage FREE concerts in parks in all five boroughs.

HBO Summer Film Series in Bryant Park continues on Mondays through mid-August, with flicks filmed in NYC or about NYC. This week, it’s Pillow Talk, with Rock Hudson and Doris Day, a classic romcom about the advertising world of Madison Ave. Next week, it’s The Hustler, with Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason.
Hip Hop Shakespeare in the Park – Enjoy hip hop versions of Henry IV and Measure for Measure in parks in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, several nights a week through mid-August. Shakespeare wrote in iambic pentameter, the Elizabethan version of the rhythm of hip hop wording.
Intrepid Movie Series – Bring your own seating for these FREE screenings on the flight deck. This week, it’s the lunacy of Tom Cruise in Cocktail.
Sunset Salsa – The dance floor heats up when the sun goes down at Hudson River Park every Tuesday in July and August. FREE beginner Salsa lessons at 6:30pm, and FREE dancing with some of NYC’s best DJs starting at 7:15pm, at Pier 63 at the foot of 23rd St. on the Hudson River. Sunset and river breezes included.
Hudson RiverFicks – Big Hit Wednesdays include FREE popcorn, at Pier 63. This week it’s the sci fi thriller Arrival.
Uptown Bounce – The annual FREE outdoor street fair of the Museum of the City of New York and Museo del Bario, on four successive Wednesdays through August 9th, with a different theme each week, and music and dancing to match. Last week it was a Latin theme. This week, it’s a throwback to the ’90s with the anthems you loved when you wore snap bracelets and butterfly clips—from grunge and gangsta rap to bubblegum pop and black nail polish punk, and next week it’s a return to the 80s with tributes to the music of New Yorkers David Bowie and Whitney Houston. Enjoy cocktails on the terrace, art-making activities and gallery tours. Registration is required to ensure space and includes FREE museum admission.
Apres Wednesday – Enjoy Hump Day with concerts or animated film shorts on the Terrace outside the Winter Garden glass atrium in Lower Manhattan, thanks to Arts Brookfield. This week it’s animated shorts, 5pm to 8pm. The series runs through mid-August.
Broadway in Bryant Park – Spend your lunch hour enjoying performers from top Broadway and Off-Broadway shows sing and dance the best numbers from their shows.
Movies With a View – In Brooklyn Bridge Park. Today, Casablanca with Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, what many consider the best – or one of the five or ten best – films ever made. Here’s looking at you, kid!
Everybody Tango – Enjoy a FREE Argentine tango lesson at 6:45pm and 7:45pm by instructors at Strictly Tango NYC. Dancing to to music by a tango DJ is from 8:15pm, outdoors under the stars at West Harlem Pier, 125th St. at the Hudson River. Part of the Summer on the Hudson Festival of events. Note that this is the final Everybody Tango of the 2017 season.
