The 2017 New York International Auto Show opens to the public on Friday, with more than 1000 shiny new cars, SUVs, crossovers, trucks and supercars, including more than one dozen international premieres. Here are three notable first looks, the 2018 Audi RS 3, 2018 Audi TT RS, and the Infiniti QX80 Monograph concept.
2018 Audi RS 3
Available for the first time in the US, this is the first compact Audi sedan to wear the souped-up RS badge, specifically developed for the US market as an entry-level high-performance luxury sedan. It features an all-new generation five-cylinder engine that produces 400 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque that can launch you 0-60 mph in just 3.9 seconds, mated to a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission.
When in manual shift mode and when approaching the engine redline, the tachometer acts as a shift light and changes colors, prompting the driver to upshift via the steering wheel paddle or gear selector lever.
The RS 3 has a top track speed of 155 mph, or you can boost that further with the Dynamic plus package to 174 mph, more than enough for rush hour traffic.
You also get Audi’s famous quattro all-wheel drive system, fully integrated within the drive modes, which include comfort, auto, dynamic and individual. Each mode changes gear shift points, steering, throttle response and damper control for more precise handling in variable road conditions. Steering is specially tuned for the RS, for sporty handling and precise road feedback while driving. There are optional ceramic brakes.
Although it is based on the A3, the RS 3 has a different grill, and RS badging on the exhaust pipes, brake calipers, on the embossed leather seats, and on illuminated door inlays. And Audi’s distinctive flat-bottom sport steering wheel with shift paddles. It’s also packed with safety features, including blind spot monitoring, and state-of-the-art connectivity including Apple CarPlay™ and Google™ Android.
The 2018 Audi RS 3 will set you back $54,900 when it arrives in showrooms later this year.
Audi also is debuting the all-new 2018 Audi TT RS.
With an all-new five-cylinder engine delivering 400 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque, this is the most powerful production TT model Audi has ever produced. It features a new 2.5-liter TFSI® engine that delivers the distinctive five-cylinder sound that is unmistakably Audi and harkens back to the original turbocharged five-cylinder, the Audi Ur-quattro.
No price has been announced.
Infiniti QX80 Monograph
This is an entirely new design for the popular full-size SUV segment. This is is a concept, indicating this what the popular Infiniti QX80 will look like in the near future.
Unmistakable Infiniti signature design elements include the double-arch grille, which for this vehicle is taller and wider, creating a powerful new “face”, while the crescent-cut D-pillar has been reshaped. There’s more glass, for more visibility, and reducing that “locked in” feeling back row passengers get in most SUV models.
Since this is a concept, not a production model, there’s no information on price.
