Kwanzaa at the American Museum of Natural History – Join American Idol star Ruben Studdard, plus storytelling, crafts workshops and other music and dance performances.
Carnegie Deli serves its last – After more than 80 years serving celebrities alongside the rest of us, who knows how many tons of corned beef, pastrami, pickles, matzoh balls and more, this venerable Jewish deli in midtown is closing its doors. You will be missed.
Freebie Friday – Free admission to NYC museums including MOMA. No passes or coupons needed. Just go.
Freebie Friday – FREE Grand Central Neighborhood Tour. Every Friday at 12:30, docents from the Grand Central Partnership guide you through the history of the fabled Grand Central Terminal and some equally-fabled nearby landmarks including the Chrysler Building. There are no tickets, no reservations. Just meet at Sculpture court at 120 Park Avenue (southwest corner of East 42nd Street). Tour is 90 minutes.

New Year’s Eve in Times Square – The biggest and best party on the planet. Celebrate with a million or more of your closest friends.
- Car Service Scam Alert – Beware of hefty peak demand surcharges from car services like Uber, because of the limited availability of licensed NYC taxis and locally-owned car services like Dial 7 and Carmel and others which do not add budget-busting New Year’s Eve surcharges. Another possibility is car service provider Gett, which is offering a $40 flat-rate private ride anywhere south of 110th Street in Manahttan. It’s pricey, but at least what you know what you are paying before you get a nasty surprise on your smartphone when you call up a ride.Coney Island – FREE amusement park rides before the fireworks

Fitness Fair – Start the new year with a day of FREE fitness classes and seminars on healthy everything.
Second Avenue Subway – NYC’s newest subway opens to the public at noon. Take a ride on the new Q extension, from 59th St to 96th St.
Monday, January 2
Federal Hall – Learn about George Washington’s daring 1776 Christmas Day crossing of the Delaware River and defeat of the Hessians in Trenton, considered a turning point in the Revolutionary War. Presentations are at 11am and 2pm. FREE. Also visit an exhibit on the American Revolution, closing soon.
