Black Forest Brooklyn – Open every day during the holidays, serving the regular menu of homemade German dishes, a long list of unusual beers, and Glühwein, the spiced mulled wine. On New Year’s Eve, everybody gets a free glass of Champange at midnight to toast 2017, and watch the Time Square Ball Drop on the giant TV screen. My mother was from Bavarian, so my go-to meal here is Weisswurst, delicate veal sausages served with a sweet mustard. Leave room for dessert, which includes one of the best Black Forest cakes on the planet. Black Forest Brooklyn is at 733 Fulton St.
Tikka Indian Grill – Open 365 days a year serving Indian favorites, including vegetarian dishes, of course. Try the flavorful Chennai lamb, seasoned with curry leaves and Sambhar powder, for $13.95. That’s cheap anytime, especially on a holiday. Tikka Indian Grill is at 165 Grand Street, in Williamsburg, and another location in Kew Gardens, Queens.
Tikka Roll House – This is casual, BYOB restaurant in Astoria is the newest from the owners of Tikka Indian Grill (see above), also open 365 days, but serving a different menu focusing on vegetable rolls ($4-$6) and curry bowls ($11-$13). Try the Bhuna gobi roll, a wok-tossed dish based on cauliflower. Tikka Roll House is at 34-14 30th Ave in Astoria.
