Saturday in NYC
LC Kids – The LC Kids season of free programming at the Atrium kicks off with a story-and-music double feature. It starts at 11AM, seating is first come first serve. Recommended for kids ages 2-5.
- Storytime at the Atrium: The Darkest Dark by Chris Hadfield – From astronaut, bestselling author, and social media superstar Chris Hadfield, a story about embracing your fears and following your dreams. Chris loves rockets and planets and pretending he’s a brave astronaut, exploring the universe. Only one problem—at night, Chris doesn’t feel so brave. He’s afraid of the dark. But when he watches the groundbreaking moon landing on TV, he realizes that space is the darkest dark there is—and the dark is beautiful and exciting, especially when you have big dreams to keep you company. LC Kids Storytime at the Atrium is presented in collaboration with Little, Brown Books for Young Readers.
- Artists at the Atrium: Tim Kubart and the Space Cadets – Get ready to celebrate what makes “home” really special! HOME is Tim’s third album for families and is a pop celebration of the small moments in life, the ones that matter most. It was released in the fall of 2015 alongside a multi-city tour. The lead single, “Breakfast Club,” reached the top of the Sirius XM Kids Place Live charts. Tim and his band of Space Cadets have played sold-out shows at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn Bowl, Symphony Space, Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk, and the Smithsonian.
Saturday and Sunday in NYC
LIC Flea & Food – The popular outdoor weekend market is open for the season, open 11AM-6PM both days with favorite vendors returning and new vendors added. Grab a beer from the only All Queens Beer Garden and enjoy the Manhattan skyline. Located at 5-25 46th Avenue in Long Island City at the corner of 46th Avenue and 5th Street. Smorgasburg – The popular food and crafts market in Brooklyn is back for the season, open 11am to 6pm both days. Note that Smogasburg has two locations:
- Saturdays: Williamsburg, East River State Park, 90 Kent Ave. (at N. 7th)
- Sundays: Prospect Park, Breeze Hill (at Lincoln Rd.)
Sunday in NYC
Medieval Fair at The Cloisters – Shine up your chain mail and gird your loins for jousting, jesting and more at this annual family-friendly event. All the details.
47th Annual African American Day Parade – More than 200 organizations from 12 states participate in this parade, founded in 1968 during the Civil Rights movement to showcase Black pride in America. Marchers include community leaders, sororities/fraternities, marching bands, and dance ensembles. The parade begins at 1PM. on 111th St. and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard, heads north to 136th St, then turns east to Malcolm X Boulevard.
Grand Army Market – The team behind Brooklyn Flea and Smorgasburg is launching a new weekly market at Grand Army Plaza starting Sunday, May 1. Situated at the northern tip of Prospect Park (at the landmark arch/rotary), Grand Army Plaza has long been home to the weekly Saturday Greenmarket and is within walking distance to Prospect Heights, Crown Heights, Park Slope and Prospect Lefferts Gardens. Every Sunday, 10am to 5pm, though October, with some of the most popular maker vendors from Brooklyn Flea, plus many new additions, and prepared- and packaged-food vendors.
Fulton Stall Outdoor Market – This popular. family-friendly outdoor food market features live music and tastings of local craft food and drinks connecting New Yorkers with fresh and healthy produce from within a 250-mile radius of New York City. Experience the Seaport District’s art installation, featuring portraits of over 100 farmers and chefs living and working in the Hudson Valley. South Street Seaport district at the corner of Fulton and Water Streets and inside Fulton Stall Market at 207A Front St., 11 AM – 5 PM
