This is a special Easter weekend edition of the weekly NYC on the Cheap list of FREE and cheap weekend events. Most are family-friendly, and the adults only events are clearly marked as such.
Today through Sunday:
Macy’s Flower Show: The theme of this year’s annual extravaganza of live blooms is “America the Beautiful”. Macy’s flagship Herald Square shop groups flora and fauna regionally, and there are special events daily in the main store and in branches nationwide. Macy’s Flower Show is daily through Sunday, April 3rd. See this NYCOTC posting for full details.
New York International Auto Show: Kick the tires of more than 1,000 cars and trucks at this annual automotive extravaganza, including a preview of 2017 models and first looks at the new Maserati SUV. NYIAS is open daily through Sunday, April 3rd.
Full Bunny Contact: For adults only, this is extreme egg hunting in which you have to collect as many eggs as possible in 60 seconds, while grown-ups hidden inside bunny suits try to stop you. Each egg is worth a prize, including gym passes, toys and tickets to Broadway shows. The event runs through Sunday, March 27, and includes bunny jousts, and special family friendly hours and programming. Tickets are $5 to watch the mayhem, or $25 for entrance to three of the four events. Event website.
Saturday, March 26th:
The Great Egg Hunt Pub Crawl: For adults only, the Third Annual Great Egg Hunt Pub Crawl takes place in Williamsburg from 2pm to 5pm. Seven bars along Grand Street are participating with drink deals and prize-filled eggs. Registration is required for $5. Prizes include passes to spas, movies and museums. Check the event website for more information, including participating bars, visit www.thegreategghunt.com.
Amazing NY Scavenger Hunt: Half-price tickets are still available for Sunday’s family-friendly scavenger hunt. Gather up family or friends to race through the city, solving puzzles and searching for clues on the way to the finish line. You’ll complete challenges like solving a riddle, doing a Sudoku, tossing a Wiffle ball or playing Dance Dance Revolution, snapping photos of people or sights like a hot dog vendor, a woman wearing red heels or a bride. A handy smartphone app feeds you challenges and clues and saves your answers and photos in one place. Click here for half-price $12.50 tickets and additional information.
Sunday, March 27th
Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival: This annual parade has been a NYC tradition since the mid-1800s, and the hats seem to get more outlandish each year. It’s not really a parade, just a gathering on Fifth Avenue, closed to traffic between 49th and 57th Streets between 10am and 4pm. The best viewing spot is around St. Patrick’s Cathedral, which offers a special Easter Sunday Mass (only the 10:15am. Mass requires tickets).
Easter Egg Hunt Extravaganza: The annual FREE celebration at Chelsea’s High Line Hotel is 10am to noon, with a farm animal petting zoo, face painting, and refreshments. The egg hunt is at 11am. Event website
