Attention NYC shoppers: At least 125 new stores are opening soon at the World Trade Center this year, including Saks, H&M, Eataly, and a collection of top designer shops. It will make downtown a top shopping destination, and give some stiff competition for our shopping dollars to fashion discounter Century 21, a few blocks away on Dey St.
The shops are due to open by summer 2016 at the new Westfield World Trade Center shopping mall, at Brookfield Place. The new shops are both around the wonderful Winter Garden glass atrium and inside dramatic the new transportation hub, which most of us are calling the Oculus, now scheduled to open (finally) on Thursday, March 3.
Those of us who remember the original World Trade Center also remember acres of shopping, and such services as shoemakers and dry cleaners in the multi-story plazas underneath the Twin Towers. It’s unlikely such small service-oriented shops will be able to afford the high-priced rents in the new fashion and food malls.
Pardon the pun, but here’s what’s in store for NYC shopping, as reported by the local newspaper Tribeca Citizen, WWD and New York Magazine, grouped by category:
