There’s plenty to do in NYC free and cheap on weekends, including this mid-January weekend. Activities include your last chance to see the remaining holiday decorations and several museum and gallery exhibits before they get packed away.

Mulchfest 2016 – Bring your holiday tree to a NYC park to be chipped into mulch for your own garden or sidewalk trees, or for the Parks Dept. to use. Details here.

Gingerbread Lane – The world’s largest gingerbread village, through Jan. 9th at the New York Hall of Science in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, Queens. Admission fee.
Glittering World – This is the final weekend of a jaw-dropping display of traditional and modern Native American jewelry by top craftsmen. At the Museum of the American Indian in Lower Manhattan. Since it’s part of the Smithsonian, admission is free everyday. Go before it closes on Sunday and drool over the bling. I have. Several times. Details here.
A Little Bite of the Big Apple – Kid-sized exhibit about life in NYC, with child-size police cars to drive, books and more, through Jan. 18 at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan on the Upper West Side. Admission fee.
Ernest Hemingway: Between Two Wars – Personal correspondence and more from his youth in Idaho to his years in Key West, Cuba and Spain, wiritng some of the best beloved classics in the English language. Through Jan. 31 at the Morgan Library in Midtown. Admission fee
Saturday in NYC
Bargemusic – Walk across the gangplank to a renovated barge for a family-friendly concert and the chance for Q&A with musicians. FREE concerts at 4pm Saturdays through January 14 at Brooklyn Bridge Park. Bargemusic website.

Sunday in NYC
No Pants Subway Ride – It’s the annual event day to show your underwear on the NYC subway, so make sure it’s clean and attractive, and that you can keep a straight face if you participate. Anybody with a MetroCard can participate, or watch and photograph, the 15th Annual No Pants Subway Ride. The event is 3pm to 5pm, with various starting points around town.
Sunset Boulevard – Free screening of the iconic film starring Gloria Swanson and William Holden, directed by Billy Wilder, at the Mid-Manhattan Library. Details here.
