As always, there’s plenty to do in NYC free and cheap on weekends, including one that begins with Friday the 13. Enjoy street fairs, holiday train shows and exhibits this weekend without busting your holiday budget.
Unlike other “what to do in NYC on the weekend” lists, only NYC on the Cheap gives you a list of only FREE and $10 or less stuff to do, unless you buy stuff. Unless otherwise noted, street fairs are 10am to 5pm.

Canstruction – FREE – See how creative artists can be with cans of food. LEGO-like Canstruction pop art sculptures are made up of 100,000 cans, which will be distributed by City Harvest to nearly 500 soup kitchens and food pantries across NYC in time for Thanksgiving. At Brookfield Place, which used to be called the Winter Garden at World Financial Center. 10am to 6pm daily. Canstruction website

Grace Church Christmas Fair – More than two dozen vendors, and the $2 admission supports charity. Hours are 10am to 4pm both days. Or, make it a “date night” Saturday, for the “Wine & Cheese Reception & Preview ” with music and extended shopping hours, 5pm to 7pm. 802 Broadway at 10th St. Event website.
Whiskers in Wonderland – Nearly 200 adorable and lovable cats, kittens and rabbits will be available for adoption, through the Alliance for NYC’s Animals. And even if you don’t take home a new pet, enjoy face painting for the kids, pet product giveaways and entertainment. Among the shelters and rescue groups presenting animals for adoption are Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC), Animal Rescue Fund, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), K9Kastle, Kittykind, Linda’s Cat Assistance, NYC Metro Rabbit and Sean Casey Animal Rescue, and more. Taking place at the Petco Union Square, 17th St. and Broadway, Saturday 11am-5pm and Sunday noon to 5pm. Event website.
