Kids Fest: Stages in the Square is the first-ever FREE performing arts festival, with music, dance, theatre, puppetry, circus performances and family workshops.
Kids Fest is tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 17, 10am to 3pm in Madison Square Park.
There will will be three stages for music performances where children can learn simple skills and the appreciation of music while dancing along and having fun.
Music performances feature an eclectic mix of children’s performing artists including bilingual musician Sonia De Los Santos, kindie rockstar Joanie Leeds & The Nightlights, a dance party with Brunch Baby, Brunch, a musical performance with NYC high school students in Sing for Hope Youth Chorus, and an interactive show from neighborhood favorites Songs for Seeds.
The stages also feature creative storytelling and theatrical performances. Join Story Laurie as she combines new renditions of folk tales with original music and song, Catskill Puppet Theater will present Sister Rain and Brother Sun acted out by large, animated rod puppets, Children’s Shakespeare Theatre will present The Taming of the Shrew with talented actors ages 8-18, and sketch comedy with Story Pirates.
Also enjoy high energy performances from magician The Amazing Max, who combines magic and comedy, and Big Apple Circus – Circus to Go! presents a circus-themed stage show featuring plate spinning, contortion, balancing, whip cracking, audience participation, and more, all led by the traditional circus ringmaster. The circus masters also host face painting, a costume swap, and costume parades.
Kids Fest also includes interactive workshops to learn performance skills. Calpulli Mexican Dance Company will teach children Aztec movements and then take the stage themselves for a performance of Mexican dance, music, movement, and costumes.BXBXKids!, a division of Broken Box Mime Theater, will teach movement storytelling skills, an instrument and little composers workshop will be presented by The Little Orchestra Society, and Path to Rhythm’s founder Adam Issadore will lead several interactive drumming session.
You can continue the festival fun with face painting, a costume swap, and costume parades led by Big Apple Circus.
