The NYC Food Bank Tax Assistance Program provides free services to low income New Yorkers, including elderly and working poor, and to self-employed taxi drivers and child care providers. The tax prep experts also can advise you on whether you qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a key piece of the public safety net, which can be worth up to $8,159 for families.
You must earn $51,000 or less with dependents or $18,000 or less without dependents to be eligible for the free tax help from the NYC Food Bank Tax Assistance Program.
The free tax prep help will be available weekdays from January 22nd to April 15 at banks, churches, senior centers and other locations.

Food Bank’s Tax Assistance Program is one of the largest programs of its kind in the country, and completed more than 40,000 tax returns for New York City’s working poor last year— helping to bring more than $80 million in tax refunds and credits back into the city.
The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help for those who make $52,000 a year or less and need assistance filing their return. Simply use the handy VITA Locator Tool or call 1-800-906-9887 to find the site closest to you. This program is usually offered at community and neighborhood centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls and other public locations. This year, more than 90,000 volunteers are expected to participate through 13,000 community sites.
The Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) Program is geared toward those over 60 who have questions or need help filing their returns. Volunteers, usually through nonprofit groups, offer their time via a grant from the IRS. To locate the nearest TCE site, use the AARP Site Locator Tool or call 888-227-7669.
Look for local help. If you live in New York City, for example, you could have your tax return prepared via the Food Bank’s Tax Assistance Program, which completed more than 39,000 tax returns last year. Eligibility requirements include earning $51,000 or less with dependents or $18,000 or less without dependents.
