Enjoy the first weekend of April with one of these free and frugal family-friendly events. As always, nothing on this NYCOTC list is more than $10, because we believe you can be cheap and still have fun in the greatest city on the planet.
Brooklyn Flea – The popular market heads back outdoors this weekend for its seventh season of good food, antiques and handmade crafts and clothing. Brooklyn Flea has become so popular there are now five locations – Fort Greene (Saturday Flea), Williamsburg (Saturday Smorgasburg), Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 5 (Sunday Smorgasburg), Park Slope (Sat + Sun Flea). Pillow Fight Day 2014 – Bring a soft pillow to Washington Square on Saturday, from 3-5 p.m. for this annual international event. Bopping bodies only, not heads. The feathers will fly. Read the NYCOTC review of last year’s event, with a video of the fun.
Macy’s Flower Show – This is the last weekend to enjoy The Secret Garden, this year’s theme. The spring blooms take over 10,000 square feet of the main floor of the flagship store on 34th St. Full details in this previous NYCOTC post.
Tartan Day Parade – Kilts, bagpipes and lots of tartans march up Fifth Avenue on Saturday. Full details in this previous NYCOTC post.
Street Fairs – The street fair season begins when temperatures allow. This is what’s on the street this weekend –
- Saturday – Sixth Avenue Chelsea Festival, on Sixth Avenue from 23rd Street to 32nd Street
- Sunday – Union Square-Broadway Festival, on Broadway between 17th Street and 23rd Street
Beetlemania – Celebrate, and remember, the 50th anniversary of the arrival of The Beetles in New York City on their first concert and TV appearance tour. This FREE exhibit opened last month to huge crowds, who are mostly gone now, so you can have the place to yourself and your memories of the Fab Four and the music that changed the world.
